In this inspiring programme from BBC TV's Great Britons series, the young Isaac Newton is flogged in front of his classmates for not paying attention during the lesson. The punishment as depicted is historically inaccurate since such floggings were always administered to the bare buttocks, the spray birch being a relatively lightweight instrument of chastisement.
