The Harrow School birchrod
Harrow, the famous 'school on the hill' situated in outer London, still maintains the tradition of boys wearing the characteristic Harrow straw boater. Corporal punishment, however, is a thing of the past and the only link with the flogging days of yesteryear is a regulation Harrow School birchrod lovingly preserved under glass. The historic implement was featured in a recent TV documentary about the school.
