An imaginative caning machine featured in a 1920s tale by Edwy Searles Brooks. In this story two opposing factions of schoolboys form secret societies and in this scene the victim has been captured by members of the rival society who are disguised in sinister monks' cowls. One assumes that the boys did not offer their machine to the headmaster as a labour-saving device!
