The Royal Hospital School

RHS boys used to wear naval uniform at all times: these archive pictures show prewar pupils in their naval square
rig. Pupils still dress in naval uniform for ceremonial occasions, including the impressive annual speech day,
when the entire school stages a march past on the enormous parade ground, led by their first class band.

- In 1995 the Royal Hospital School Band returned to Greenwich for the opening of the Lord Nelson exhibition,
parading close by the original site of the school. Click HERE to view pictures
of the occasion.
- The annual school speech day, held at the end of the summer term, is always an impressive occasion. Here are
some pictures from this event taken a few years ago.
- A 1998 TV documentary compared the 'regimented' life at this school with the free and easy existence of pupils
at nearby Summerhill, brainchild of the radical educationalist A S Neill. View some stills
from the programme.
